Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has reaffirmed his confidence in Moroccan international Chemsdine Talbi despite the winger’s limited playing time during the 2026/27 season.

Le Bris explained that Talbi’s omission from Sunderland’s European squad had restricted his opportunities for additional minutes but insisted the player remained part of his plans.

The winger’s absence from the starting line-up has sparked debate among Sunderland supporters in recent weeks, with some fans calling for him to be introduced during the second half of Sunday’s goalless draw against Leeds United.

European Squad Limits Talbi’s Opportunities

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Le Bris identified European squad regulations as a key factor behind Talbi’s limited involvement.

“It started with the European squad list, and unfortunately, that list is very limited—you simply can’t include all your players. That said, participating in this competition would have been very beneficial for Talbi and several other players,” Le Bris said.

The Sunderland manager added that playing in the competition would have given the Moroccan winger valuable minutes.

“It would have been good for him to get some minutes in this competition. After that, we relied on two wingers, Nilson Angulo and Malick Fofana, and we trust them even though they sometimes go through tough spells,” he added.

Le Bris Expects Talbi to Get His Chance

Despite Talbi’s limited opportunities, Le Bris expressed confidence that the winger would have a chance to demonstrate his qualities.

“I am sure Chemsdine will get his chances too. Giving him the opportunity to play against Leeds in such a tight and highly competitive match was a bold decision, but he can add real value to the team, and that will continue to be the case in the future,” he concluded.

Sunderland currently sit 20th in the Premier League, having collected five points from their opening eight matches of the 2026–27 campaign.
