Lamine Yamal starts Ballon d’Or ceremony with 2026 Kopa Trophy win

Lamine Yamal has been named the 2026 Kopa Trophy winner, becoming the first player to receive the award at this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London.

The 19-year-old Barcelona forward was recognised as the best under-21 player after an outstanding season for both club and country. The honour is Yamal’s third in succession, following competition from several of the leading young talents in European football.

His latest success further underlines the rapid progress he has made and his status among the most prominent emerging players in the game.

Yamal played a part in Spain’s run to World Cup 2026 glory. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final to claim the title, with the Barcelona player contributing during the country’s campaign.

He also helped Barcelona win La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup during the 2025-2026 season. His performances meant he combined major domestic honours with international success for Spain.

The Kopa Trophy was the opening award presented at Monday evening’s Ballon d’Or event in the British capital. Yamal’s victory adds further individual recognition to a season in which he made an impact at the highest level despite his age.

The schedule information accompanying the coverage listed Barcelona’s Spanish league fixture against Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026.

It also listed Czechia against Spain in the Nations League – Path One on 12 November 2026.

Yamal’s latest achievement brings together his individual progress and Spain’s international triumph, while also reflecting his contribution to Barcelona’s successful domestic campaign. His third consecutive Kopa Trophy further establishes him as one of the standout players of his generation.
