Vinicius Junior faces fresh scrutiny after 17th-place Ballon d’Or finish

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has slipped to 17th in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, with his latest setback prompting renewed mockery over a defiant promise he made after missing out on the award two years ago.

The Brazilian was among the leading contenders in 2024 after an outstanding season with Real Madrid, helping the club win the Champions League. Many expected him to claim the prestigious individual prize, but he was beaten by Spain international Rodri, formerly of Manchester City and now with Barcelona.

Vinicius responded to the result on X, writing: “I’ll do it 10 times if necessary, they are not ready.”

However, his position in the Ballon d’Or standings has declined since then. He finished 16th in the 2025 edition and has dropped another place this year, leaving him 17th in the 2026 ranking.

That fall represents a significant change from the status he enjoyed two years ago, when he was regarded as one of the most prominent players in world football and a leading candidate to win the award.

Once his 17th-place finish was announced before Monday evening’s ceremony in London, social media users revived his previous comments. Many treated the ranking as evidence that he has moved away from the level that made him such a strong contender in 2024.

Vinicius’ difficulties have also extended beyond the individual awards. The forward has endured a difficult start to the current campaign with Real Madrid, with his performances and attacking influence drawing criticism.

The situation has led to questions over whether he can recover his place as a regular starter for the Spanish club. His position is under greater pressure following the recent form of Ivorian player Yan Diomande.

Diomande has impressed when given opportunities and has taken advantage of the chances available to him, increasing the competition for places in Real Madrid’s attack.

Vinicius now faces the challenge of rediscovering his best form and rebuilding his standing after two successive falls in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
