Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid has renewed scrutiny of the club’s defensive planning and its decision not to sign a replacement after allowing two defenders to leave during the summer.
Ronald Araujo and Alvaro Cortes departed Barcelona, but the club did not bring in another defender to strengthen the squad. That decision is now facing greater criticism as pressure increases on Hans-Dieter Flick’s back line.
Several players were considered during the transfer window, including Alessandro Bastoni, whose estimated value is about 70m euros, and Castello Lukeba, valued at approximately 60m euros.
Other names linked with a possible move included Luka Vuskovic, whose estimated value is around 54m euros, Nico Schlotterbeck at about 50m euros and Goncalo Inacio at roughly 45m euros. Cristian Romero was also listed as a potential option, with an estimated value between 30m and 40m euros.
Although the players differed in cost and technical profile, adding another defender would have given Flick more scope to manage his squad, particularly because of the demanding tactical requirements of his approach.
The German manager uses a high defensive line, a system that requires defenders to combine pace, concentration and positional awareness with the ability to deal with space behind them.
That makes a lack of defensive options more problematic, especially when injuries, suspensions and poor form occur alongside the demands of competing on several fronts.
Pau Cubarsi, despite his young age, carries significant responsibility at centre-back, while Gerard Martin is among the options available to Flick.
However, relying on a limited group of players can become a serious issue when fitness levels fall or absences begin to accumulate.
January opportunity
According to a report by Barca Universal, sporting director Deco could have anticipated the need to strengthen the defence before the season began rather than leaving the squad with limited choices in a position central to Flick’s plans.
Developing emerging players through Barcelona’s academy remains an important part of the club’s project. But that approach does not necessarily remove the need to sign established players, particularly when the demands of the competition are high.
With the January transfer window approaching, Barcelona have an opportunity to address the problem by adding defensive options and giving Flick greater flexibility during the second half of the season.
The club must now decide whether to act in January to correct what the report describes as an error in its summer planning, or continue with the current squad despite the risks highlighted by recent matches.
