Valverde injury concern tempers Real Madrid’s Clasico victory

Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Barcelona at Camp Nou was overshadowed by concern over Federico Valverde after the Uruguay international was forced off with a muscle problem.

The Real Madrid captain is due to undergo medical tests at the club’s Valdebebas training centre tomorrow, Tuesday, with the results expected to establish the seriousness of the injury and whether he will need time away from football.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Valverde first felt discomfort during the opening half of the match. Despite his symptoms, he chose to continue playing, even as Denzel Dumfries began warming up in preparation for a possible replacement.

Valverde remained on the pitch until around the middle of the second half before his physical condition finally forced him to leave. He had played on for more than 40 minutes while managing the pain.

The circumstances offer conflicting indications about the injury. His ability to continue could suggest that the problem was not initially severe, but the decision to carry on while affected has also raised concerns that it may have worsened.

Real Madrid will therefore wait for the outcome of the examinations at Valdebebas before determining the next stage of Valverde’s treatment and recovery. The timing is particularly significant because of the importance he has assumed within the side.

Valverde impressed again at right-back against Barcelona and has become one of the influential figures in Real Madrid’s improvement during their most recent matches. His potential absence would leave Jose Mourinho waiting for clarity over one of his key players.

The Real Madrid manager praised Valverde’s determination after the match and said the midfielder had given everything despite being injured.

“There is another name I do not want to overlook, and that is Valverde, who played for more than 40 minutes while injured,” Mourinho said. “He suffered the injury, but he wanted to continue and push himself to the limit, and he gave everything while he was on the pitch.”

The victory leaves Real Madrid celebrating an important Clasico success, but the club must now balance that result with anxiety over the condition of its captain.

The listed La Liga schedule includes Barcelona on 31 October 2026, with Deportivo Alaves also listed. Racing Santander is listed in La Liga on 01 November 2026, alongside Real Madrid.
