Bayern Munich preserved their position at the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday, overcoming a late fightback to claim three points on matchday seven.
The victory took Bayern to 17 points, while Freiburg remained third on 13. The result also gave Vincent Kompany something to celebrate from his sickbed, two days after the Belgian manager collapsed at the training ground.
Aaron Danks took charge from the Bayern bench in Kompany’s absence, and his side made the stronger start. Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 16th minute after winning possession himself before finding Michael Olise.
Upamecano continued his run towards goal and received a through ball from his team-mate, leaving him one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The defender kept his composure to finish and put Bayern ahead.
He then made an important contribution at the other end, preventing Freiburg from equalising by blocking Lucas Holer’s attempt.
Bayern increased the pace of their attacking play as the first half progressed, producing an open and entertaining contest. However, Michael Olise, whose effort came in the 24th minute, along with attempts from Lennart Karl in the 25th minute and Serge Gnabry in the 28th, failed to trouble the target sufficiently.
Gnabry did find the net shortly before half-time, adding Bayern’s second goal in the 42nd minute. The forward converted after being picked out by Brown, reaching 100 Bundesliga goals in the process.
Freiburg continued to look for a route back into the match after the interval, while Harry Kane missed his first clear opportunity in the 57th minute when he tried to score with a header.
The hosts eventually reduced the deficit in the 82nd minute through an own goal by Tom Bischof. It was Freiburg’s first home defeat, and the goal raised hopes of a dramatic recovery against the league leaders.
Bayern, however, ultimately contained the revival. Michael Olise settled the result in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, scoring his side’s third goal to end any prospect of a Freiburg comeback.
The win keeps Bayern Munich at the summit after seven rounds, while Freiburg’s unbeaten home run came to an end.
