Mbappe double gives Real Madrid victory over Barcelona in thrilling Clasico

Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in a dramatic Clasico at Camp Nou, with Kylian Mbappe scoring both of the visitors’ goals. The result ended Barcelona’s unbeaten start to the league season and reduced the gap between the two long-standing rivals to three points.

Andriy Lunin started in goal for Real Madrid because Thibaut Courtois was ill and unavailable. The opening stages were cautious, with both sides taking time to assess one another, although Real Madrid created the first opportunities.

Joan Garcia was well placed to keep out the early efforts, while Barcelona were forced into a change before the half-hour mark. Right-back Xavi Espart suffered an injury and was replaced by Alejandro Balde.

Both teams had chances as half-time approached, but it was Real Madrid who took the lead. Following a fine attacking move, the danger appeared to have passed for Barcelona when Gerard Martin attempted to clear. His powerful effort struck Mbappe and flew into the net, wrong-footing Joan Garcia.

Mbappe celebrated the goal despite the fortunate deflection, but Barcelona almost levelled immediately. Lamine Yamal was presented with an excellent opportunity from close range, only to send his attempt wide.

Neither side made changes at the interval, meaning the Dutch players remained on the bench. Mbappe appeared to have two further openings early in the second half, but Barcelona’s defence held firm and prevented him from finishing either chance.

Barcelona eventually equalised shortly after the hour mark. A quickly taken corner created the opening for Raphinha, whose powerful strike gave Lunin no chance and brought the hosts back into the game.

The equaliser shifted the momentum towards Barcelona, who began to control the match. Lunin then produced an outstanding save to stop the home side from completing the turnaround.

The match also marked a memorable occasion for Dumfries. The Netherlands international replaced Federico Valverde to make his first appearance in a Clasico.

With just over 70 minutes played, De Jong returned to the field after a lengthy injury absence following the World Cup. He came on in place of Fermin Lopez.

For long periods, the match appeared destined to finish level, but Real Madrid found a decisive moment in the 88th minute. Eduardo Camavinga used his strength and pace to create the opening before setting up Mbappe, who finished from close range to make it 2-1.

Real Madrid held on to secure a victory that brought Barcelona their first league defeat of the season. Barcelona will return to home action on Saturday, 31 October, when they face Deportivo Alaves. Real Madrid will travel to play Racing de Santander.
