Durban City secure historic first-ever CAF Confederation Cup group-stage berth
Durban City have secured a historic first-ever place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after defeating AS Port Louis 2000 3-0 in the second leg of their qualifying tie in Mauritius.
Eric Tinkler’s side completed a convincing 6-1 aggregate victory to advance to the group phase, marking a significant milestone in the club’s maiden continental campaign.
The South African outfit made a strong start to the return fixture, taking the lead through Gaston Sirino in the 12th minute before Haashim Domingo doubled their advantage 13 minutes later.
Durban City maintained their dominance after the break, with substitute Ethan Brooks adding a third goal in the 52nd minute to seal an emphatic win and confirm their progression.
The result represents another important achievement for a club continuing to make its mark in South African football. Having emerged on the top-flight scene only two seasons ago, Durban City have now taken their first steps towards establishing themselves on the continental stage.
Their journey to the group stage has included a successful passage past Burundi’s Rukinzo before they overcame AS Port Louis 2000 with authority over the two legs.
The qualification gives Tinkler and his players an opportunity to measure themselves against some of the continent’s leading clubs as they prepare for the next phase of the competition.
Durban City’s achievement also comes amid contrasting fortunes for South African football in the Confederation Cup. Kaizer Chiefs suffered a shock elimination on Friday after failing to progress beyond the same qualifying stage.
While Chiefs’ continental campaign ended prematurely, Durban City have continued their impressive run, securing a place in the group stage and giving their supporters plenty to celebrate.
With qualification now confirmed, Tinkler’s men will turn their attention to the group-stage draw and the challenge of maintaining their momentum as they pursue further success in their historic continental debut.
