Ayoub Bouaddi's bench role explained

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has explained his decision to leave Moroccan international Ayoub Bouaddi out of the starting lineup for his side’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, insisting that the selection was influenced by the tactical demands of the encounter.

The Sky Bluess boss stressed that his choices were based on the specific qualities required to compete against Aston Villa, rather than any lack of confidence in Bouaddi’s ability to contribute to the team.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Maresca explained that the tactical approach for the Aston Villa game differed from Manchester City’s previous encounter against Paris Saint-Germain, prompting him to make adjustments to his midfield selection.

According to the manager, the differences between the two opponents required a different balance in midfield, with his selection determined by the technical attributes and characteristics he believed would best suit the match.

Maresca also addressed his decision to keep Rayan Cherki on the bench while deploying Phil Foden in midfield, explaining that the choice was part of his tactical plan for the Aston Villa encounter.

The Italian manager indicated that his starting lineup was selected to provide the specific qualities he wanted from his players, with the demands of the match ultimately determining who received the nod.

Regarding Bouaddi, Maresca reaffirmed his confidence in the Moroccan midfielder’s potential, making it clear that his absence from the starting lineup should not be interpreted as a sign that he has fallen out of favour.

The City manager pointed to the performances of Enzo Fernández and Elliot Anderson as factors behind his decision, noting that both midfielders delivered encouraging displays during the contest.

Their performances made it difficult for Bouaddi to secure a place in the starting eleven, with Maresca opting to maintain the midfield combination he believed was best suited to the encounter.

However, the manager expects the situation to change as Manchester City approach a demanding run of fixtures. The congested schedule is likely to create opportunities for squad rotation, potentially allowing Bouaddi to earn more minutes and demonstrate his qualities.

Maresca emphasised that competition for places remains an important part of his squad management, with players expected to remain ready to take advantage of opportunities whenever they arise.

For Bouaddi, the immediate challenge will be to continue working hard in training and convince the manager that he deserves a more prominent role in the team.

Despite the disappointment of the defeat to Aston Villa, Maresca’s comments suggest that the Moroccan international remains part of his plans, with future opportunities expected as Manchester City navigate their busy fixture schedule.
