Bournemouth beat Manchester United 3-0 in the eighth week of the Premier League after capitalising on a series of defensive mistakes.
Ryan Vitor opened the scoring before Marcus Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s advantage with a close-range finish. Francois Evanilson completed the victory in the second half after another serious error at the back by Manchester United.
Manchester United began with a spell of controlled possession, moving the ball quickly through midfield with a succession of one-touch passes. However, they struggled to turn that dominance into clear chances.
Bournemouth threatened first when Ryan met a corner completely unmarked in front of goal, but his header was poorly directed and went narrowly wide of the left post. He later tried to dribble past a Manchester United defender, although the ball was deflected behind for a goal kick.
Diogo Dalot found space inside the Bournemouth penalty area after receiving a short pass, but his effort sailed well over the crossbar. Mason Mount also sent a cross into the area, but none of his team-mates was able to reach it.
Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams was booked, while Andre Santos of Manchester United also received a yellow card. Evanilson committed a heavy challenge on a Manchester United player, prompting referee Jarred Gillett to award a free-kick.
With 15 minutes remaining before the interval, the match was still goalless. The deadlock was broken when Justin Kluivert delivered a free-kick into the box and Ryan Vitor rose to strike a powerful header into the bottom-left corner.
Manchester United nearly responded when Brian Mbeumo created room inside the area and fired towards the bottom-right corner, but Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic made an excellent save. Youri Tielemans then saw a promising move stopped when Bournemouth intercepted his pass inside the box.
Five minutes before half-time, Tielemans was booked. The referee added two minutes of stoppage time before Bournemouth went into the break 1-0 ahead.
Manchester United made their first change at half-time and tried to regain control after the restart. Their efforts were undone when a defensive mistake presented Tavernier with a simple opportunity, which he converted from close range to make it 2-0.
Mbeumo went close again after receiving an accurate pass, but Petrovic kept out his shot towards the bottom-right corner. Matheus Cunha then wasted a clear chance, sending a close-range effort well wide of the left post, while a powerful Mbeumo strike from inside the area went just over.
Bournemouth also made a first change, followed by a second Manchester United substitution. The visitors continued to circulate possession, but Bournemouth remained dangerous: Ryan seized on a misplaced pass in the penalty area and forced goalkeeper Senne Lammens into an impressive save low to his left.
Bournemouth made a third substitution, as did Manchester United. Evanilson then reached the edge of the area after another major defensive lapse and finished superbly to seal the 3-0 win. Ajax loanee Aydan Heaven and Manchester United players including Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Joshua Zirkzee were unable to prevent the defeat.
