Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid step up pursuit of Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel
Paris Saint-Germain have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign Manchester United prospect JJ Gabriel, making Barcelona’s hopes of securing the highly rated teenager more difficult.
The forward recently turned 16 and Paris Saint-Germain have opened talks with his representatives. Real Madrid are also intensifying their efforts to recruit him, with both clubs said to have made progress in their discussions with the player’s camp, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.
Paris Saint-Germain are seeking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Gabriel’s future at Old Trafford. The French club are understood to be presenting both an attractive sporting project and a strong financial proposal, while Real Madrid are working to strengthen their position in the competition for his signature.
Barcelona believe they have an important advantage in Gabriel’s sporting preferences. The teenager is particularly drawn to the Catalan club and its footballing philosophy, while he is also interested in a project that offers young players opportunities to develop.
That preference, however, does not mean a move to Barcelona is close to being agreed. Financial considerations are expected to play a key role in determining the outcome of the transfer.
Barcelona recognise the significant potential of the young forward but do not want to enter a financial bidding war or pay an excessive fee for a player who has not yet made an official first-team appearance for Manchester United.
The Catalan club’s position is that any agreement must fit both its financial criteria and its sporting policy. That stance could leave it vulnerable if Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid decide to increase the proposed value of the deal.
Manchester United still hold the player’s registration and have not abandoned their efforts to resolve his situation. The club retains control of his future while discussions continue over the next step in his career.
Barcelona’s interest is therefore being tested by the growing competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. While the Catalan side is relying on the appeal of its sporting project and its reputation for developing young talent, its rivals may be prepared to offer a more lucrative financial package.
