2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup: Ghana’s Black Maidens stun Canada to book Round of 16 spot

Ghana’s Black Maidens produced a decisive second-half performance to defeat Canada 2-0 and secure qualification for the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Needing victory to progress, Nana Joe Adarkwa’s side delivered when it mattered most, scoring twice after the break to finish second in Group C and reach the knockout stage on their return to the global competition.

The result marks a significant achievement for Ghana, who missed the previous two editions because of a ban but have now advanced from the group stage in their comeback tournament.

Black Maidens dominate but struggle to score

Ghana entered their final group fixture knowing anything less than a win would jeopardise their hopes of progressing to the next round.

The Black Maidens started brightly against Canada and created several opportunities in the opening half. However, their promising attacking play was undermined by rushed decisions in the final third, preventing them from converting their dominance into goals.

Despite registering 13 attempts before the interval, Adarkwa’s team went into the break without finding the breakthrough.

Ghana maintained their attacking intent after the restart, continuing to test the Canadian defence as they searched for the goal that would put them on course for qualification.

Gloria Ameaa and Jessica Appiah posed problems for their opponents with their forward runs and attacking efforts, but neither could find the back of the net during their attempts to break the deadlock.

With time running out, Adarkwa turned to his substitutes in search of a solution, introducing Linda Achiaa and Christiana Ashiaku midway through the second half.

The changes proved decisive, transforming Ghana’s attacking threat and eventually delivering the goals that had eluded them in the opening period.

Achiaa and Ashiaku deliver decisive blows

Achiaa made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring with her first touch to give Ghana the lead.

The substitute reacted quickly after the ball deflected off the crossbar, finding the net to relieve the pressure on the Black Maidens and put them in control of the contest.

The opening goal gave Ghana renewed confidence as they pushed to protect their advantage and secure the three points required to advance.

Canada faced the task of finding an equaliser, but Ghana remained determined to finish the job and avoid a late setback.

Ashiaku then provided the decisive moment in the closing stages, producing a brilliant strike to double Ghana’s lead.

The forward expertly lobbed the Canadian goalkeeper, sealing a 2-0 victory and sparking celebrations as the Black Maidens confirmed their place in the knockout rounds.

The two substitutes proved instrumental in the result, rewarding Adarkwa’s decision to refresh his attack at a crucial stage of the encounter.

Ghana advance as Group C runners-up

The victory lifted Ghana to second place in Group C with four points from three matches, behind Brazil, who topped the group with seven points.

The Black Maidens’ progression represents a positive outcome after a challenging start to the tournament, with their response against Canada ensuring they remain in contention for the title.

Their qualification also provides an encouraging return to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following their absence from the previous two editions.

With the group stage now complete, Ghana will turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they will seek to build on the momentum generated by their crucial victory over Canada.
