Jeremy Doku shines with nine successful dribbles despite Manchester City defeat to Aston Villa
Jeremy Doku delivered an outstanding individual performance despite Manchester City suffering a 2-1 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.
The Belgian winger completed nine successful dribbles, highlighting his ability to trouble defenders with his pace, close control and direct attacking approach. His performance was one of the bright spots for Manchester City, who suffered their first league defeat of the season under head coach Enzo Maresca.
Doku repeatedly challenged Villa’s defenders in one-on-one situations, using his acceleration and technical ability to create opportunities for the visitors. However, his attacking threat was not enough to prevent City from leaving Birmingham without a point.
Doku’s brilliance cannot prevent City defeat
Aston Villa secured victory through a brace from Nicolas Jackson, who opened the scoring after capitalising on a defensive error before restoring the hosts’ lead in the second half.
Erling Haaland briefly brought City level with a header from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross, but Jackson struck again to secure all three points for Unai Emery’s side.
Despite City’s attempts to find another equaliser, Villa held firm to claim an important victory and extend their impressive recent record against the reigning champions.
Belgian remains a major attacking threat
Doku’s display once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous dribblers. His ability to beat opponents and create space offers City an important attacking outlet, particularly when facing compact defensive formations.
The 24-year-old has consistently shown that he can unsettle defenders through direct running and quick changes of direction. Against Villa, those qualities remained evident even as City struggled to turn their attacking pressure into a positive result.
Although the defeat ended City’s perfect start to the league campaign, Doku’s individual performance provided encouragement for Maresca as his team looks to respond in its upcoming fixtures.
For the Belgian winger, the challenge will be to complement his impressive dribbling with greater end product as Manchester City seek to return to winning ways.
