Mamelodi Sundowns knocked out of CAF Champions League by Wiliete SC

Mamelodi Sundowns have been eliminated from the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after Wiliete SC edged them out in the second qualifying round.

The South African club, regulars on the continental stage, were held to a goalless draw in the first leg before another closely fought match ended 1-1 in the return fixture.

That result was not enough for Mamelodi Sundowns to secure their place in the group stage, despite playing the second leg in front of their home supporters.

Wiliete SC advanced under the away-goals rule, which remains in use in this competition. Their goal in South Africa proved decisive in a tie that finished level on aggregate.

The result represents a major setback for Mamelodi Sundowns, whose continental campaign has ended much earlier than expected.

Wiliete SC, meanwhile, produced an impressive performance by eliminating one of the most established clubs in African football. The Angolan side will now move on to the next round, with qualification for the group stage remaining within reach.
