Cristian Tello backs Lamine Yamal to win Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappe

Former Barcelona winger Cristian Tello has backed Lamine Yamal to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, insisting the teenage sensation deserves the prestigious individual award ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé.

Speaking to Cadena SER’s Que t’hi Jugues, Tello expressed his admiration for the Barcelona star, who is among the leading contenders for the award following an impressive campaign with club and country.

“It is Lamine Yamal’s time. Mbappé is a great footballer, but I think Lamine is the best,” Tello said.

The former Blaugrana winger’s endorsement adds to the growing debate surrounding the Ballon d’Or race, with Yamal and Mbappé emerging as prominent candidates ahead of Monday’s ceremony in London.

Yamal has enjoyed another productive period with Barcelona, showcasing his creativity, dribbling ability and influence in the final third. His performances have strengthened his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in world football.

Tello believes it is Yamal’s time to shine

Tello’s backing comes ahead of Sunday’s El Clásico against Real Madrid at Camp Nou, where Yamal will have another opportunity to demonstrate his quality against one of Barcelona’s fiercest rivals.

The former winger also believes Barcelona can recover from their recent Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and approach the showdown with confidence.

Tello insisted the loss against PSG should not undermine the progress made under Hansi Flick, while highlighting the importance of securing three points against Madrid in the La Liga title race.

However, it is his assessment of the Ballon d’Or contest that stands out, with Tello placing Yamal ahead of Mbappé despite acknowledging the Frenchman’s outstanding ability.

With the ceremony approaching, Yamal will hope his performances and achievements are enough to earn him the biggest individual recognition in football.
