Russell Molefe backs Sundowns to beat Wiliete and reach Champions League group stage
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Russell Molefe expects the club to overcome Wiliete SC and reach the CAF Champions League group stage, predicting a 2-0 victory in Friday’s second-leg meeting at Lofts.
The first leg of the second preliminary round tie ended goalless in Angola on Sunday, leaving Sundowns needing a win to progress.
A repeat of the 0-0 scoreline would send the match straight to a penalty shootout. However, any scoring draw would eliminate Miguel Cardoso’s side under the away goals rule, leaving the South African club with no room for error.
Sundowns are expected to challenge for victory in every match because of their financial backing, star-studded squad and established tactical identity. Their record, however, presents a contrasting picture.
The club have traditionally shown considerable strength and resilience during lengthy league campaigns and in major continental competitions, but have often found knockout ties more difficult.
Molefe, who played as a striker for Sundowns, believes the pressure of Friday’s fixture will suit the team rather than unsettle them.
“My only concern with the game is the scoreline. If they score first, we will need to score two goals. But I’m not that worried since we are playing at home. Here in South Africa, it’s doable.”
He added: “These are the types of games the Sundowns players enjoy. We thrive when our backs are against the wall. We are going to beat this club 2-0,” Molefe told KickOff.
The former forward was also confident that Sundowns would not be beaten, arguing that a failure to win would be more likely to reflect tactical mistakes than a shortage of quality in the squad.
“No way we will lose tonight. If it happens, the problem will be the coach’s tactics. Right now, all our focus is on achieving the third star,” he said.
Sundowns are aiming to return to the group stage as they continue their pursuit of further continental success. The outcome against Wiliete will determine whether that campaign continues or ends at the preliminary-round stage.
Kick-off is at 20:00.
