Harry Kane’s season puts Kylian Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or case under pressure

A Spanish journalist has challenged Kylian Mbappe’s claim to the 2026 Ballon d’Or, arguing that Harry Kane outperformed the Real Madrid forward in the key measures used to judge the game’s leading individual award.

With the winner due to be announced next Monday, attention is focused on three prominent names in the race: Lamine Yamal, Kane and Mbappe. The France international has also undertaken an extensive media campaign in support of his bid to win the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career.

However, Spanish journalist Anton Meana believes Kane has the stronger case. Speaking on the Cadena SER programme El Larguero, Meana compared the two forwards’ seasons and said the Bayern Munich striker had achieved more in front of goal, in major matches and in terms of silverware in Germany.

“Kane was better than him in every aspect; he scored more goals, knocked him out of the Champions League and beat him at the World Cup, as well as winning titles in Germany,” Meana said, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

The journalist also criticised the way Mbappe’s campaign had been presented to the public, suggesting that the narrative surrounding the player had overstated his achievements.

“He made his message suggest that he had produced a much better season than he actually did,” Meana added.

The comments have placed greater scrutiny on Mbappe’s season as the Ballon d’Or announcement approaches. They also underline the debate over which criteria should carry the greatest weight when deciding the winner, with individual statistics, performances in decisive matches and team honours all central to the discussion.

Mbappe, Kane and Lamine Yamal remain the leading figures in the contest, but Meana’s assessment has questioned whether the Real Madrid forward’s public case reflects his actual performances on the pitch. The result will be revealed on Monday, when the Ballon d’Or winner for 2026 is announced.
