Interest from Paris Saint-Germain in Ibrahim Maza has prompted debate over whether the Algeria international should leave Bayer Leverkusen or continue his development in Germany.
No official offer or agreement between the clubs has been announced, so any transfer remains hypothetical. However, former Algeria international Ali Bencheikh believes Maza’s decision should be based on his sporting prospects rather than the prestige of either club.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder joined Bayer Leverkusen from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2025 and is under contract until 30 June 2030. He has continued his development in a competitive environment, with the long-term agreement reflecting the club’s commitment to his progress.
Maza is known for his ability to beat opponents, his vision and his effectiveness in tight areas. He can play behind the striker, operate as a number 10 or move out wide, giving his team several options in attack.
Bencheikh, a former MC Alger player and prominent figure in Algerian football, told Africafoot that those qualities are important but will need to be matched by greater consistency. Maza must continue improving his decision-making, tactical discipline and effectiveness in the final third if he is to establish himself at the highest level of European football.
PSG opportunity comes with competition
PSG’s style under Luis Enrique could suit Maza’s strengths. The French club emphasises possession, attacking movement and technical combinations, while the player is capable of operating between the lines, contributing to build-up play and finding solutions in congested areas.
A move to Paris could expose Maza to a new high-level environment and allow him to work alongside leading players. But Bencheikh believes the key issue would be the role available to him.
The competition for attacking places at PSG would be a major factor. Despite his technical ability, Maza would have to adapt quickly, earn his manager’s trust and prove he could contribute at a club where results are central. The transfer would only represent a genuine opportunity if it came with realistic prospects of regular involvement.
Leverkusen offers continuity
Remaining at Bayer Leverkusen would allow Maza to continue a path that is already under way and gradually take on greater responsibility. If he retains the confidence of his coaching staff and receives satisfactory playing time, staying in Germany could help him consolidate his progress and develop his influence on matches.
Continuity would also reduce the uncertainty associated with changing league, tactical system and professional environment. Bencheikh stressed, however, that staying would not automatically be the better choice. Stability would only be valuable if Maza continued to develop; if his role stagnated or his opportunities diminished, a new project would need to be considered.
His club decision also carries significance for Algeria. More experience, regular competition and increased responsibility would help the 20-year-old improve his maturity and consistency for the national team.
For Bencheikh, the most suitable destination will be the one that gives Maza the clearest route to progress, establish himself and confirm his potential, regardless of the club’s reputation.
