Tolu Arokodare says Ajax Amsterdam’s ambition to return to the top of Dutch football was central to his decision to join the club on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Nigeria international, who was attracting interest from several clubs, saw the Amsterdam side’s rebuilding project as an opportunity to revive his own career while helping restore one of the Netherlands’ most prominent football institutions.
Arokodare discussed his move in an exclusive interview with Africafoot, explaining that Ajax’s desire to reclaim its position as a leading force in Dutch and European football made the proposal particularly attractive.
Ajax vision persuaded Arokodare
Conversations with Jordi Cruyff, one of the club’s technical figures, and Ajax’s head coach strengthened Arokodare’s belief in the project.
The former KRC Genk striker viewed the club’s plans as more than simply an opportunity to secure regular football. He was also persuaded by the prospect of contributing to a collective effort to bring Ajax back among the leading teams in the country.
Ajax have endured recent seasons that have not matched the standards established during the club’s strongest periods. For Arokodare, that made the challenge of joining the side’s revival even more appealing.
Dutch football offers familiar elements
Although he is now beginning a new chapter in the Netherlands, Arokodare does not consider the country’s football entirely unfamiliar.
The striker has faced Dutch teams in friendly matches, giving him an initial understanding of some of the characteristics of the game in the country. His successful spell with KRC Genk has also provided a useful reference point as he settles into life at Ajax.
Arokodare believes the Belgian and Dutch leagues share similarities, a factor that could help him adapt to his new surroundings. His experience in Belgium means he already has a working knowledge of a football environment that he feels has clear links with the one he is now entering.
A new start with high expectations
The loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers represents both a sporting challenge and a fresh start for the Nigerian forward. Expectations at Ajax are high as the club seeks to re-establish itself at the summit of Dutch football.
Rather than focusing solely on adjusting to a different league, Arokodare intends to become part of the wider team effort. His objective is to make a meaningful contribution as Ajax pursue a return to the position they have traditionally occupied in the Dutch game.
His choice reflects the appeal of a project built around reconstruction and a push towards the top places. The next task will be to turn that ambition into performances and results, with Arokodare hoping to play an important part in Ajax’s revival.
Ajax will shortly play their second match of the UEFA Conference League league phase against Atalanta Bergame.
