Kaizer Chiefs loan gives Faiz Abrahams chance to build on bright start

Faiz Abrahams has described his move to Kaizer Chiefs as an opportunity he is “just grateful” to have after his football future appeared uncertain only a few months ago.

The 21-year-old joined the Soweto club on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch FC after an unsuccessful move to Israel. He has since made four appearances for Kaizer Chiefs and is working to establish himself in the first team.

Abrahams has impressed with his left-footed ability, using his close control to move beyond defenders and deliver accurate crosses. He made his most notable contribution in September, scoring a superb free-kick in Kaizer Chiefs’ 3-2 Betway Premiership win over Siwelele FC.

“In fact, I’m working harder than ever because I want to cement a regular spot in the first team,” Abrahams told KickOff.

He said the transition to the club had been a positive one, crediting both the coaching staff and his team-mates for helping him settle.

“I’ve fitted in well and I have to credit the coaching staff and my teammates because they are a great bunch. I just have to continue giving good performances,” he said.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity and all praise to God for it,” he added.

The Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations winner with Amajita now faces a demanding period with Kaizer Chiefs, who are preparing for three significant fixtures.

Their immediate assignment is the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie against Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Abrahams will then hope to feature when Kaizer Chiefs host TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium in the Carling Knockout Last 16.

The club’s schedule will culminate in the biggest fixture on the domestic football calendar, when Kaizer Chiefs meet arch-rivals Orlando Pirates on October 31. That match will also take place at the Calabash.

Abrahams has made clear that his priority is to turn his early opportunities into a regular place in the side. His performances so far, including the decisive free-kick against Siwelele FC, have given him a platform as he attempts to make the most of his spell with one of Africa’s biggest clubs.
