Vinicius Junior endured one of his lowest points since joining Real Madrid as he failed to attempt a single dribble in the match against Leipzig.
The Brazilian forward, once feared across Europe for his ability to beat defenders, appeared short of confidence and influence during a performance that has increased concern within the club. His attacking contribution was limited to two shots, both saved by Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, and one involvement in the move that led to Arda Guler’s goal for a 2-0 lead.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the statistics represented the poorest level Vinicius has reached since putting on a Real Madrid shirt. His movement, expression and body language suggested a player struggling to enjoy his football, rather than the energetic winger who previously fought for every ball.
The situation will be particularly troubling for Real Madrid because the club renewed Vinicius’ contract this summer and elevated him to the status of one of its leading players. He was placed close to Kylian Mbappe in the club’s plans and expected to play a central role in the project. At present, however, his performances appear a long way from that position.
Diomande takes his chance
Vinicius was substituted by the manager in the 70th minute, with the coach bringing on the Ivorian player Diomande. The replacement made an immediate impact, setting up Mbappe for Real Madrid’s third goal before scoring the fourth himself with an impressive finish.
That contribution quickly made Diomande the new favourite among supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Vinicius watched the closing stages from the bench.
The decision to remove him also prompted questions because Vinicius will not play for Real Madrid again until 4 November in the Champions League. He is serving a four-match suspension in La Liga and will not return to domestic action until the match against Celta Vigo on 21 November.
The manager defended the decision, saying: “This substitution is not the change of a manager who is dissatisfied, but the change of a manager who has a strong bench.”
Bernabeu jeers continue
The Bernabeu crowd continued to jeer Vinicius during the match with Leipzig, as they have done in recent games, while Diomande received a much warmer response. The clearest image of the Brazilian’s evening came after his substitution, when he sat on the bench looking dejected and serious before being the first player to leave for the dressing room at the final whistle.
Real Madrid’s immediate priority is to help Vinicius recover his form. The manager acknowledged that something may be troubling the forward, but said only the player himself could explain what he was feeling.
“If he is sad, that is a very personal matter,” he said. “You may have your own opinion, but I believe he is the only one who can tell you honestly what he feels or does not feel.”
He added: “I understand that he needs everyone’s support, and I believe he needs it. Jeers when we play away from home motivate us, but when they happen at home, they are painful. As his manager, I am happy with what he has achieved.”
