Clinton Larsen considering international move after Venda FC exit

Former Magesi FC head coach Clinton Larsen is weighing opportunities in South Africa and abroad after leaving Motsepe Foundation Championship side Venda FC only five matches into the new season.

The Limpopo-based club ended its association with Larsen following a difficult start in which they suffered four defeats and recorded one draw. Their 2-0 defeat by Real Native FC proved decisive, leaving the team at the bottom of the standings.

Venda FC had made 12 new signings during an extensive off-season overhaul, but the changes did not produce an immediate improvement in results. The club subsequently decided to make a change in the dugout.

Larsen is now relying on his experience of more than two decades in management as he considers his next appointment.

“At the moment, I’m still at home. My agent is busy trying to connect me with few teams,” Larsen told KickOff.

“My agent is looking at different options inside and outside the country. It depends on the project, it depends on the type of club you go to. Sometimes you are successful and sometimes you are not.”

The 24-year coaching veteran has worked at several South African clubs, including Bloemfontein Celtic, Chippa United and Golden Arrows. He said he was open to considering opportunities beyond the country’s top flight rather than focusing exclusively on a return to the PSL.

“Some coaches prefers being in the PSL, but I feel it’s time also to look at other options because I’ve been doing this now for 24 years,” he said.

“I have gained a lot of experience, so I’m sure I will be able to handle some of the situations that presents themselves.”

Larsen also pointed to his experience of playing in the Champions League, saying that background had prepared him for difficult working conditions and challenging environments.

“I experienced Champions League football as a player, so I know how hostile some environments can be,” he said.

“But like I said, my experience will help me should I decide to take that route. My agent has been in contact with clubs all over,” added Larsen.

The coach’s immediate future will depend on the project and the club involved, with his representative continuing to explore possible destinations both within South Africa and overseas.
