Army Rocket appoint former Moroka Swallows striker Joseph Mhlongo as assistant coach

North West ABC Motsepe League club Army Rocket have appointed former Moroka Swallows striker Joseph Mhlongo as assistant coach under head coach Themba Masango.

The club confirmed the appointments in a statement, announcing Masango as head coach and Mhlongo as his assistant as they begin work with the team.

“Army Rocket FC is pleased to welcome Themba Masango as head coach and Joseph Mhlongo as assistant coach to the club,” the club said.

Masango arrives with coaching experience from Kruger United, African All Stars and Sekhukhune United, among other clubs. Army Rocket said his background and knowledge would be valuable as they pursue their objectives.

“Coach Masango brings coaching experience from various clubs, including Kruger United, African All Stars, and Sekhukhune United, among others,” the statement added.

“His experience and football knowledge will be important as the club continues to work towards its objectives.”

Mhlongo, 36, joins the technical team after a playing career that included a spell with Black Leopards in South Africa’s top flight. He began his career with Roses United in 2013 and officially retired from football in 2025.

During his playing days, Mhlongo also represented Polokwane City FC, Upington City FC and Ubuntu Cape Town. His final club was Leruma United in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Mhlongo’s coaching move

Shortly after ending his playing career, Mhlongo moved into coaching with Gauteng ABC Motsepe League side Tembisa Hollywood Thunder, a club owned by Orlando Pirates legend Jerry Sikhosana.

He also gained coaching experience at Mabopane JM before taking up his new role at Army Rocket.

“Coach Mhlongo joins the technical team with experience at Thembisa Hollywood Thunder and Mabopane JM,” Army Rocket said.

“He will work alongside the head coach to strengthen the team’s technical preparation and performance.”

The club welcomed both members of the new coaching team and wished them success as they take on their responsibilities.

“The club welcomes both coaches to the Army Rocket FC family and wishes them every success as they take on their new responsibilities,” the statement read.
