Raya confident Arsenal can take winning run into Bayern Munich test

David Raya says Arsenal have regained confidence after responding to their defeat by Brighton with three successive victories, but expects a demanding challenge against Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s Champions League meeting.

Mikel Arteta’s side returned from the international break with wins in each of their next three matches. Their latest came on Sunday, when Noni Madueke’s 80th-minute goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

“We came back very, very strong, especially after that tough defeat against Brighton and having 19 days since then to play a game,” Raya told Arsenal’s website.

“The way we responded, the way we played, the way we came back, is incredible.”

Although pleased with Arsenal’s recent performances, the goalkeeper accepted that there were still areas for the team to refine before facing Bayern Munich.

“We’re delighted with the performances we have put in every single game. There are things to improve, of course, as always, but we just take the positives, and we’re looking forward to Wednesday now,” he added.

Arsenal were made to work for their points at the City Ground, where Madueke’s deflected effort proved enough despite the visitors managing only one shot on target.

Raya said the result demonstrated the side’s patience and resilience, particularly given Arsenal’s previous difficulties at the same venue.

“(We showed) maturity and a lot of desire. Keep doing the right things and the ball will get into the net,” he said.

“We had experiences in the last two years where we drew 0-0 here, so I think we showed a lot of character to keep digging for the result.”

The Spain goalkeeper also paid tribute to Madueke for finding a way through against opponents who had defended stubbornly.

“In the end, with a few crosses and a few of Bukayo’s (Saka’s) balls, the ball went in thanks to Noni,” Raya said.

“He’s a special player, and it’s going to be a special goal for him to get the win at such a difficult ground and against such a difficult team. So, I’m delighted for him.”

Arsenal’s attention now switches to the Allianz Arena, where Bayern Munich will provide a significant test of the form they have built since the Brighton loss.
