Betway Premiership: Muzeu’s late header caps dramatic weekend of action

Sekhukhune United moved up to sixth in the Betway Premiership after Bethuel Muzeu’s late header secured a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Marumo Gallants at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The result extended Papi Zothwane’s positive run, with Sekhukhune collecting 14 points from their opening eight matches. Marumo Gallants, meanwhile, remain without a win after eight fixtures, having recorded only two draws.

The match was Ronnie Kanalelo’s second in charge of Gallants. He began his tenure with a 2-0 defeat by Orlando Pirates last month.

Oageng Phiri put the home side ahead in the 30th minute, but Melusi Buthelezi’s own goal restored parity for Gallants 12 minutes from full time. The visitors appeared increasingly dangerous after the equaliser, prompting both coaches to make changes in search of a winner.

However, it was Zothwane’s substitutions that proved decisive. Muzeu headed home in the referee’s optional time to give Babina Noko maximum points.

Milford FC maintained their impressive start to life in the top flight with a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in the KZN derby at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium.

Siphosethu Ndlabi scored the only goal as Xanti Pupuma’s side followed up their 5-1 win against Richards Bay FC in another KZN derby before the FIFA international break.

Milford are the only newly promoted side in the top five. They sit fourth with 15 points from nine matches, an exceptional return for a team playing in the elite league for the first time.

Kruger United also claimed a late victory, beating ninth-placed Chippa United 1-0 at Buffalo City Stadium.

Sipho Sibiya struck in the 90th minute for Abram Mongoya’s team, lifting Kruger to 12th in the standings with seven points from eight games. Chippa coach Brandon Truter will be concerned by his side’s difficult beginning to the campaign, with Chippa collecting eight points from the same number of matches.

Siwelele FC earned a morale-boosting win against Polokwane City, with Michel N’Guessan scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute. The result should ease some of the pressure on coach Godfrey Mosoetsa and his players.

With the latest round of Betway Premiership fixtures completed, supporters can now select their own Team of the Week and compare their choices with the official Soccer Laduma selection.
