Manuel Neuer closes in on Bayern Munich return for Arsenal Champions League clash

Manuel Neuer is edging closer to returning for Bayern Munich against Arsenal in the Champions League this week, after concerns over his availability for Wednesday’s match.

Sky Sport Germany reports that the Bayern goalkeeper trained normally on Monday. His involvement against Arsenal will depend on how his foot responds after suffering a heavy bruise recently.

Bayern face Arsenal in the third round of the Champions League league phase on Wednesday. If Neuer does not receive medical clearance, Jonas Urbig will start in goal against the Gunners.

Bayern director Max Eberl said on Saturday that Neuer had been unable to play in the team’s match against RB Leipzig because of fluid in his foot.

“There was some fluid in Neuer’s foot, and the situation did not allow him to play against Leipzig,” Eberl told Bild.

“We will see whether the situation allows him to play on Wednesday against Arsenal,” he added.

Bild reported that Bayern’s original plan had been to rest Neuer for Saturday’s fixture against RB Leipzig, allowing him to regain full fitness in time to be available for the Champions League meeting with Arsenal.

The newspaper added that fluid can build up in the foot as a result of tissue irritation caused by excessive strain.
