Sevilla mock refereeing after Real Madrid defeat with ‘museum famous for robberies’ post
Sevilla have used their official social media accounts to sarcastically criticise the refereeing after their 4-1 defeat by Real Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.
The Andalusian club were unhappy with several decisions made by the officiating team led by Alejandro Muniz Ruiz, including the decision not to send off Arda Guler for an elbow on Peque Fernandez when the score was still 0-0.
Sevilla also disputed the challenge by Ibrahima Konate on Orri in the build-up to Kylian Mbappe’s second goal for Real Madrid. They questioned the validity of the penalty awarded to the French forward as well.
Using footage from Movistar Plus, Sevilla posted a series of sarcastic messages on their official account on X to highlight their complaints.
One post read: “The Prado Museum is very close, yet you go to the museum famous for robberies.”
The reference was a mocking response to what Sevilla believe were refereeing errors that influenced the outcome of the match.
The club later published two further posts about the incident before Mbappe’s second goal. The first said: “Could you show the replay from 18 seconds earlier? We would like to see the whole move.”
Sevilla’s official website also used the headline “An elbow and it’s over” in its match report, referring to Guler’s incident with Peque Fernandez, which had angered the club.
Sevilla players had called for Guler to receive a red card after he struck Peque Fernandez in the face during the first half.
The refereeing controversy comes only days before the eagerly anticipated Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with debate over officiating decisions in La Liga continuing to grow.
Real Madrid’s four goals were scored by Mbappe, who netted twice, Guler and Yan Diomande. Sevilla’s only goal came from Manuel Sebastian.
The victory moved Real Madrid on to 21 points in third place, while Sevilla remained on 14 points in sixth.
Diomande created a goal in two consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time in his career in Europe’s major leagues.
The 19-year-old also became the first player under the age of 20 to score and provide an assist in the same La Liga match for the club during the 21st century. He achieved the feat at the age of 19 years and 338 days.
That surpassed the previous record held by Jude Bellingham, who had done so aged 20 years and 51 days.
