Mamelodi Sundowns held by Wiliete SC as Teboho Mokoena suffers injury

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Wiliete SC in Angola on Sunday, while midfielder Teboho Mokoena was carried off injured in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie.

The result leaves the tie evenly poised before the return match in South Africa, with Sundowns needing to make home advantage count if they are to reach the Champions League group stages.

The match began 30 minutes late because of adverse weather conditions, but Sundowns made the stronger start once play eventually got under way.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso made two changes to the side that defeated Orlando Pirates to win the MTN8 last weekend. Ricardo Goss replaced the injured Ronwen Williams in goal, while Fawaaz Basadien came in at left-back for Aubrey Modiba.

Sundowns created the clearest opportunity of the opening stages inside five minutes. Nuno Santos found Bryan Leon running behind the Wiliete defence, but although Leon managed to get a shot away, a defender cleared the effort off the line.

The visitors continued to control the tempo and enjoyed the greater share of the attacking play during the first half. However, they were unable to turn their possession and chances into a goal before the interval.

Their performance was overshadowed by the injury to Mokoena, who was taken from the field on a stretcher after a heavy challenge by a Wiliete player.

The incident will be a concern for Cardoso as Sundowns continue to manage the demands of their domestic schedule alongside their continental campaign.

Despite their dominance for much of the first half, the South African side could not find a breakthrough and must now produce a decisive performance in the second leg to advance.

Durban City take control against AS Port Louis

Durban City made a more convincing start to their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie, beating AS Port Louis 3-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Haashim Domingo and Gaston Sirino scored for Eric Tinkler’s side before Tashreeq Morris added a third from the penalty spot.

The victory gives Durban City a two-goal advantage to take into the return leg.
