Haitham Hassan earns plaudit from Celtic manager

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has expressed confidence in Egyptian international Haitham Hassan, praising his contribution against Benfica and backing his ability to make a difference for the Scottish giants.

O’Neill’s comments come after Hassan was handed a starting role in Celtic’s Scottish Premiership encounter against Hearts at Celtic Park, following an encouraging performance in the team’s 4-1 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League last week.

Despite Celtic’s disappointing result against the Portuguese side, Hassan made a positive impression by creating a goal-scoring opportunity, with his contribution helping improve the team’s attacking play in the second half.

The Celtic manager highlighted the impact Hassan and Callum Osmand made after coming on against Benfica, insisting that their performances demonstrated the qualities they could bring to the team.

Speaking to BBC Sport, O’Neill said: “I have great confidence in Callum Osmand. He and Haitham Hassan gave us a strong boost in the second half of our match against Benfica, so Osmand deserves this opportunity.”

Although the manager was specifically explaining his decision to give Osmand an opportunity, his comments also acknowledged Hassan’s contribution and the positive influence the Egyptian winger had during the European encounter.

Hassan has faced criticism in recent weeks while adjusting to life at Celtic, having struggled to secure a regular place in the starting line-up since joining the club during the summer transfer window.

The Egyptian international arrived from Spanish side Real Oviedo on a four-year contract, with an option to extend his stay for a further season, as Celtic sought to strengthen their attacking options.

O’Neill’s assessment of his performance against Benfica offers encouragement to Hassan as he continues to adapt to Scottish football and fight for a more prominent role within the squad.

For the winger, the manager’s recognition of his contribution could provide an important confidence boost as he seeks to translate his ability into consistent performances.

With Celtic competing on domestic and European fronts, Hassan will be eager to reward the faith shown in him and establish himself as a reliable attacking option for O’Neill’s side.
