Foden says Ipswich goal was exactly what he needed in Manchester City win

Phil Foden said scoring against Ipswich Town was important to him after Manchester City secured a 3-2 victory in the seventh round of the Premier League.

The England international admitted he had been frustrated by the chances he had missed earlier in the season, making his goal against Ipswich particularly satisfying.

“I definitely needed that goal,” Foden told the BBC. “I have missed a lot of big chances this season and it was eating away at me, so I am delighted to have scored today.

“But the most important thing is getting the three points and putting ourselves in a good position in the league table. It is a huge win.”

Foden also spoke positively about Maresca’s start with the team, saying the players had responded well to his approach and the ideas he wanted to introduce.

“He has adapted really well, and the players are accepting his ideas and what he wants to implement,” he said. “There is still a lot we need to improve, and today’s match was a good example of that because we can play much better.

“We hope we can continue to develop and become stronger.”

Although Manchester City took the points, Foden said Ipswich deserved considerable credit for the way they performed and made the match difficult for the home side.

“We have to give Ipswich a lot of respect because they played a great game,” he said. “They were good in possession, played with aggression and made things difficult for us.

“It does not have to be a beautiful performance every time. It is about getting the result, and we did that today, so I am very happy.”

Foden also praised the influence of the Manchester City supporters, saying their backing helped drive the team forward during the match.

“You can feel the fans behind us and pushing us on,” he said. “It is great to play at home because you can hear how loud they are, and they give us the extra boost we need.”
