Liverpool come from behind to hand Brentford first Premier League defeat of the season

Liverpool recovered from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 and inflict their first Premier League defeat of the season after seven matches.

Brentford took the lead through Keane Lewis-Potter, but Victor Munoz equalised before Alexander Isak completed Liverpool’s comeback. Brentford finished the match with nine players after Yegor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt were sent off.

The result moved Liverpool up to fifth in the table on 12 points. Brentford remain on 10 points, having recorded two wins, four draws and one defeat from their seven league fixtures.

The victory was also Andoni Iraola’s first league win against Brentford, following eight previous meetings with the club.

Brentford take lead before losing Yarmolyuk

The opening 20 minutes were evenly contested, although Brentford came close to scoring when Michael Kayode’s effort took a deflection off Jeremy Jacquet and passed narrowly wide.

Liverpool responded with a counter-attack, but Bradley Barcola was unable to convert when clean through on goal. Jacquet then intervened again to deny Igor Thiago after the Brentford forward had created another dangerous opening.

Brentford continued to apply pressure and appeared to concede a penalty when Dango Ouattara challenged Alexis Mac Allister. However, a VAR review confirmed that the challenge was legal and no spot-kick was awarded.

The home side eventually went ahead in the 44th minute. Thiago delivered the cross and Lewis-Potter met it to direct the ball into the net.

Brentford’s advantage was reduced before half-time when Yarmolyuk was shown a red card. He had headbutted Jacquet during an altercation as the players prepared for a corner.

Thiago came close to being dismissed early in the second half after a challenge on Jacquet, but he received only a yellow card. At the other end, Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made an important save to keep out an effort from Mac Allister.

Liverpool turn the game around

Liverpool drew level through Munoz, who showed composure to work his way into the Brentford penalty area before firing into the net.

With a numerical advantage, Liverpool sustained their pressure and eventually took the lead. Isak controlled the ball under pressure and calmly finished to make it 2-1.

Barcola nearly added a third when his shot struck the crossbar, while Thiago missed a close-range opportunity to bring Brentford level.

Brentford’s difficult evening ended with another red card in stoppage time. Janelt was dismissed for stopping a promising Liverpool counter-attack, sealing the visitors’ comeback victory.
