Bodo/Glimt stun Borussia Dortmund as Fredrik Sjovold seals Champions League win

Bodo/Glimt produced a memorable 1-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund as Fredrik Sjovold’s second-half finish secured a famous result at Aspmyra Stadion.

The Norwegian side responded strongly after suffering consecutive 5-0 defeats in Europe, maintaining their remarkable home record of 20 wins in their past 21 matches in all competitions.

Bodo/Glimt made the more positive start, with Patrick Berg testing the Dortmund defence before Sondre Fet sent a shot narrowly wide.

Borussia Dortmund found it difficult to establish control of the game. Jens Hauge created another threat when he brought a long pass under control, but his dangerous delivery across the penalty area evaded his team-mates.

The visitors came close to taking the lead shortly before half-time. Fabio Silva headed directly at Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin from close range, then hit the post with the rebound. However, the assistant referee had already raised the offside flag.

Bodo/Glimt continued to press after the interval and Gregor Kobel was forced into a sharp save soon after the restart, denying Andreas Helmersen.

The hosts were rewarded for their attacking approach when Sjovold moved into the penalty area and struck first time beyond Kobel to give Bodo/Glimt the lead.

Dortmund struggled to create a sustained response. Serhou Guirassy saw a close-range effort blocked as the German side looked for an equaliser.

Their clearest opportunity arrived with 15 minutes remaining. Ethan Nwaneri, the on-loan Arsenal teenager, found room to meet a cross with a header, but Haikin kept it out.

Bodo/Glimt defended their advantage during the closing stages to claim three valuable points and inflict Dortmund’s first defeat since their loss to Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup.

The result leaves both sides with three points from their opening two Champions League matches.
