Roma and Real Madrid level at half-time after lively Champions League opening

AS Roma and Real Madrid go into the break level at 1-1 after an entertaining first half in which both sides created chances.

Roma made the stronger start in front of their home supporters, forcing Thibaut Courtois into several interventions. The Real Madrid goalkeeper was tested in particular by a dangerous effort from Matias Soule.

The hosts were dealt a setback in the 17th minute when Manu Kone suffered a muscular injury and was replaced by Niccolo Pisilli.

Roma’s pressure was rewarded three minutes later. After receiving the ball from Soule, Marten de Roon struck from distance, beating Courtois to give the Italian side the lead.

Real Madrid responded in the 25th minute following a misplaced clearance by Mario Hermoso just outside the penalty area. Kylian Mbappe collected the loose ball and shot, with a slight deflection sending the effort over the Roma goalkeeper and into the net.

The two teams remain evenly matched at the interval, leaving the outcome finely balanced ahead of the second half. Both will need to find another attacking spark if they are to claim victory.
