Moroccan teenager Abdellah Ouazane is attracting growing attention in European football after French sports newspaper L’Équipe highlighted his rapid rise at Ajax and his recent breakthrough with Morocco’s senior national team.

The 17-year-old midfielder made his senior international debut in September during Morocco’s 2-0 victory over Gabon in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, marking another milestone in his development.

L’Équipe examined the youngster’s progress in its Maghreb FC feature published on Wednesday, highlighting his growing role in Morocco’s plans under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

According to the newspaper, Ouazane became the second-youngest player to represent Morocco in a competitive senior international match, behind Hachim Mastour, who made his debut aged 16 against Libya in 2015.

Ouazane reflects on Morocco debut

Ouazane came on for Abde Ezzalzouli in the 76th minute against Gabon and was involved in the build-up to Soufiane Rahimi’s second goal.

The midfielder admitted that joining a squad containing established internationals initially left him feeling reserved as he adjusted to his new surroundings.

“It was simply a pleasure. I was quite quiet during the first few days. I was taking everything in, looking around and realizing which players I was sharing the pitch with,” he said.

He also recalled how Morocco defender Issa Diop approached him during the training camp and encouraged him to express himself on the pitch, reassuring him that his team-mates would support him.

The experience offered Ouazane an early opportunity to learn alongside more experienced players as he begins his senior international career.

Ajax development follows U17 Africa Cup of Nations triumph

Ouazane’s emergence follows an important period in his development with Morocco’s youth teams.

In April 2025, he helped the country win their first U17 Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil after defeating Mali in a penalty shootout.

His performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award, with the Confederation of African Football recognising his ability to control the tempo of matches and make effective decisions in midfield.

At club level, the Amsterdam-born midfielder has progressed through Ajax’s youth system and signed his first professional contract with the Dutch club in August 2025, after a proposed move to Real Madrid failed to materialise.

His opportunities with Ajax’s senior team have increased this season under Spanish coach Míchel Sanchez, who has used him in wider attacking positions despite his preference for a central midfield role.

European recognition grows around Moroccan prospect

L’Équipe is not the only publication to identify Ouazane as a player to watch.

Earlier this month, British newspaper The Guardian included him among its 60 most promising players born in 2009.

Former Morocco U17 coach Nabil Baha has also praised the youngster’s tactical understanding. In an interview published by Africafoot on October 10, Baha highlighted his ability to read transitions, retain possession under pressure and recognise when to move the ball forward.

Such qualities have helped strengthen expectations surrounding the midfielder, although he still faces competition for a regular place in Morocco’s senior team.

2030 World Cup offers a long-term target

L’Équipe identified the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal, as a potential long-term objective for Ouazane and other emerging Moroccan internationals, including Ayyoub Bouaddi.

For now, the teenager must continue developing at Ajax while working to establish himself in Ouahbi’s squad.

Established midfielders Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El Khannouss remain among the options available to the Morocco coach, underlining the challenge facing the youngster as he seeks more international opportunities.

His early senior debut and growing recognition in Europe nevertheless represent significant steps in a career that Morocco will hope continues to progress in the years ahead.
