Rayan Cherki’s path could have led to PSG, not Manchester City
Rayan Cherki could easily have been preparing to face Manchester City as a Paris Saint-Germain player.
Instead, the attacking midfielder will line up for City against his former suitors in the Champions League.
According to L’Equipe, PSG came close to signing Cherki from Lyon in the summer of 2024. The clubs had exchanged documents for a deal worth around 15 million euros, including bonuses, and Cherki had agreed personal terms.
The 23-year-old was reportedly so excited about the move that he sent a long voice message to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi to thank him for the opportunity.
However, the transfer collapsed because Cherki wanted assurances over playing time. Luis Enrique was unwilling to guarantee him a regular starting place, and PSG ultimately withdrew from the deal.
Cherki stayed at Lyon for another season before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2025. He is now in his second campaign with the English club.
Wednesday’s meeting at the Etihad Stadium gives Cherki the chance to show PSG what they may have missed. For PSG, it is a reminder of how quickly a near-completed transfer can fall apart over one unresolved detail.
