Amogelang Motau says Banyana Banyana achieved their main objectives by experimenting with different combinations and giving younger players valuable experience against Madagascar in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers.
South Africa completed a 7-0 aggregate victory over Madagascar in Bloemfontein to reach the third round of the CAF Women’s Olympic qualifiers.
The result secured progression for Banyana Banyana, while also allowing the coaching staff to introduce new players and assess different options within the team. Motau said the match was important both for advancing in the competition and for testing the squad.
“I think today was a good game. It was one of the games that we needed to make sure that we win, so that we get into the next round of the qualifiers, and that was the most important thing,” Motau said.
“The atmosphere was amazing, the crowd here in Bloemfontein was great. I wish we can come back to Bloemfontein again.
“Also, it was an amazing game for us to try new things, experiment and bring on new players. Our perspective and objectives were executed.”
The midfielder also used the occasion to encourage young girls who hope to represent Banyana Banyana, highlighting the importance of education and a gradual progression through the different levels of the sport.
Motau thanked Sasol for providing a platform for aspiring players and said young footballers should first concentrate on their studies before developing through school and university football.
“First of all, I just want to say thank you to Sasol for making this possible and giving us a platform to show aspiring Banyana players that it is possible,” she said.
“I would like to say to the young girls first focus on school, get into school sports and varsity football, and push your way up to the national team. Those steps will help you to become a pro one day.”
