Mamelodi Sundowns close in on South Africa U20 captain Lazola Maku

Mamelodi Sundowns are edging closer to signing South Africa U20 captain Lazola Maku on a free transfer after his trial spell in Austria.

SABC Sport understands the MTN8 champions are close to completing a deal for the 19-year-old midfielder, who was on the books of Siwelele last season.

Maku recently returned from Austria, where he had trials with three clubs: SV Ried, newly promoted second-tier side FC Wacker Innsbruck and Rapid Vienna.

The midfielder spoke to the public broadcaster last month as he waited for feedback from the Austrian clubs. His trials took place during the build-up to the COSAFA Cup.

Although Maku attracted interest from abroad, Sundowns now appear to be in the strongest position to secure his services as they target one of South Africa’s most promising young players.

His potential move comes after an impressive international campaign with Amajita. Maku captained South Africa to victory in the COSAFA Cup in Mozambique, a triumph which also secured qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The team, coached by Raymond Mdaka, will defend the continental title they won last year.

Maku is still awaiting a final response from the clubs he visited in Austria, but the indications are that Sundowns are now close to concluding an agreement with the midfielder.

If the deal is completed, his next destination will be Chloorkop, where he will look to use his international success as a springboard into senior football.

The move would also represent another step towards Maku’s long-term ambition of playing abroad.
