Youcef Atal resumes Al-Sadd training as contract situation remains unclear
Algerian defender Youcef Atal has returned to training with Al-Sadd despite remaining without a contract, leaving his future at the Qatari club uncertain.
The right-back has been without a club since his contract with Al-Sadd expired on 30 June. However, recent photographs show him training alongside the team, raising questions about whether he could remain with the club or is preparing for his next move.
Al-Sadd have yet to announce a new deal for the Algeria international. His return to training has therefore left two possible explanations for his continued presence at the club.
The first is that Atal and Al-Sadd are discussing a potential contract renewal. Alternatively, the club could be allowing him to regain his fitness with the squad while he looks for another opportunity.
Neither possibility has been confirmed, and the defender’s next step remains unclear.
Atal returns to action after eight months
Atal’s return to the training ground follows his appearance in a friendly match earlier in October, when Al-Sadd recorded a 6-0 victory over Al-Shaqab.
The match marked an important step for the defender, who had spent approximately eight months away from competitive action before returning to the pitch.
However, his appearance in the friendly did not resolve the uncertainty surrounding his contractual situation. His previous agreement with Al-Sadd had already expired, and he was not included in the club’s official squad for the new season.
Despite his continued involvement in training and his recent appearance in a friendly, there has been no official confirmation that he will be part of the team’s plans for the current campaign.
His presence with the group has consequently fuelled speculation about his relationship with the club and the possibility of a new agreement.
Contract situation remains unresolved
For now, Al-Sadd have not provided an official explanation for Atal’s return to training. The absence of an announcement means it remains unclear whether the club intends to retain him or is simply helping him prepare for his next move.
The defender’s situation has continued for several weeks, with his participation in training and the friendly against Al-Shaqab offering indications that he is working towards a return to regular football.
Atal’s market value has also fallen significantly in recent months and is now estimated at €1.5m.
The 29-year-old’s immediate priority appears to be regaining match fitness after his lengthy absence from the pitch. However, until Al-Sadd or the player confirms his contractual position, uncertainty will continue to surround his future.
Whether the defender signs a new deal in Qatar or moves elsewhere remains to be seen.
