Jaap Stam backs £70m Carlos Baleba to replace Casemiro at Manchester United

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes Carlos Baleba has the qualities to fill the void left by Casemiro and become a key figure in the club’s midfield.

The Cameroonian joined United from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £70 million summer transfer but has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford after injuries disrupted his early progress.

However, Stam remains convinced that the 22-year-old can provide the physical presence, energy and technical ability United need to strengthen their midfield following Casemiro’s departure in June.

Baleba made his club debut under Michael Carrick in the 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, coming off the bench to play the final 30 minutes.

His introduction offered a first glimpse of what he could bring to the team, with the midfielder now looking to establish himself as a regular option.

Stam identifies Baleba as Casemiro’s successor

Stam believes Baleba possesses the attributes required to take over Casemiro’s responsibilities in the centre of the park.

The former United centre-back has called for a midfielder who can combine physical strength with the ability to cover ground and contribute effectively in possession.

“I really like Carlos Baleba, who has come in from Brighton. I think he can replace Casemiro.

“United need to find a replacement who is in good physical shape and has energy to cover the whole pitch. He also needs to be very good on the ball, and Baleba can do that.”

Baleba’s combination of athleticism and technical quality could make him an important addition as United seek greater control in midfield.

Casemiro’s exit has left the club needing a player capable of protecting the defence while also helping the team transition from defence to attack.

Stam’s assessment suggests he sees Baleba as a potential solution to that problem, although the midfielder must first build momentum after his disrupted start.

Injury setback delays Baleba’s United impact

United invested £70 million in Baleba during the summer transfer window, reflecting their determination to reinforce a midfield department in need of greater energy and defensive resilience.

However, injuries have limited his early involvement and delayed his opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities in a United shirt.

Carrick gradually introduced the midfielder against Tottenham, giving him 30 minutes to begin adapting to his new surroundings and the demands of the Premier League.

The 1-1 draw marked an important first step for Baleba as he attempts to build match fitness and compete for a regular place in the starting lineup.

United will hope he can stay fit and deliver the consistency required to justify their significant investment.

His ability to cover large areas of the pitch could be particularly valuable as the club looks to improve its defensive structure and win more battles in midfield.

Champions League opportunity beckons

Baleba could receive another opportunity to impress as United prepare to face Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Carrick may consider handing the 22-year-old his European debut, which would provide another test of his readiness to contribute at the highest level.

The fixture would also offer Baleba an opportunity to gain valuable experience against opposition known for their competitive approach and organisation.

However, whether he starts or features from the bench, the immediate priority will be to build on his promising first appearance and establish himself within Carrick’s plans.
