Real Madrid’s €140m bet Yan Diomande given chance to shine as Brahim Diaz waits

Yan Diomande moved into the spotlight at Real Madrid after scoring the winner against Villarreal, with backing from the club’s hierarchy and the possible suspension of Vinicius Junior potentially opening the door to a regular run in the team.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international was handed a starting place in Vinicius’ absence on Saturday and delivered the only goal of the match in the second half. His finish settled a game in which Real struggled to impose themselves and left them already trailing FC Barcelona in the standings.

Diomande had admitted only a few days earlier that he had been given limited playing time since moving to Madrid. His opportunity against Villarreal, however, produced a decisive response and strengthened his case for more involvement.

According to journalist Romain Molina, the decision to start Diomande was influenced by more than Jose Mourinho’s tactical preference. Real Madrid’s directors are said to have pressed for the club’s new signing to play more often.

That approach appears to have affected Brahim Diaz. The Spain international started in the Champions League against Inter Milan but was among the substitutes against Villarreal.

The situation underlines Diomande’s importance to Real’s long-term plans. His lack of appearances had already raised questions in Madrid, particularly given the scale of the fee paid for him. The reported desire from the club’s leadership to increase his minutes suggests he remains regarded as a significant part of the project.

Marca estimates the transfer operation at 140 million euros. The Spanish newspaper has described Diomande as “a diamond that Mourinho is managing in his own way”.

One goal cannot, by itself, justify such an investment, but Marca called the effort “a flash worth three points”. Alongside Carlos Espi, Diomande has already played a part in Real Madrid collecting seven of their 18 points in Liga.

Vinicius came on after half-time against Villarreal but was sent off after pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair. He then strongly disputed the referee’s decision.

The Brazilian could receive a suspension lasting several matches and may miss the Clasico against FC Barcelona at Camp Nou on 25 October. No punishment has yet been announced, but an extended absence would naturally give Diomande one of the clearest opportunities to establish himself.

The Ivory Coast forward will still need to prove that his display against Villarreal was not an isolated moment. Real Madrid’s Champions League trip to Rome, followed by the home match against Sevilla and the potential Clasico, could provide him with a sequence of matches in which to build momentum.

Few African players have secured a lasting place at Real Madrid, where competition for places and media scrutiny are relentless. Diomande now has two important advantages: the confidence of the club’s directors and a change in circumstances that could allow him to turn his potential into a settled first-team role.
