Milan coach Ruben Amorim criticised his side for allowing Sassuolo to equalise from a corner in their 1-1 draw in the Italian league.
The match was played at Mapei, with Milan taking the lead before Sassuolo levelled. The result means Milan remain without a win at Sassuolo’s ground since 2022.
Amorim said Milan had done enough to move ahead but failed to control the game after scoring.
“We deserved to be in front, but after scoring we did not control the match,” the Portuguese manager told DAZN. “We had to keep possession and dictate the game. We cannot sit back or settle for defending alone.”
He said Milan’s pressure became less effective as they struggled to retain the ball.
“We pressed because the momentum was on our side, but we did not do it in the right way,” Amorim added. “We were losing the ball extremely quickly. That can happen, but what is unforgivable is conceding that goal from a corner.”
Amorim also said Milan had allowed Modric too much influence in possession, while acknowledging weaknesses when play changed direction.
“We gave Modric a greater share of possession, but at the same time we struggled a little in transitions,” he said. “It became as if we were trying to impose control in their half, while they relied entirely on quick transitions, even from corners.”
The draw lifted Milan to 12 points and fifth place in the table. Sassuolo moved to eight points in 10th.
