Rayan Ait-Nouri’s return to the Algeria squad appears increasingly unlikely unless he meets two key conditions following his abrupt departure from the team’s latest training camp.
The left-back left the squad after a confrontation with manager Brahim Hemdani. Algeria went on to beat Zambia 3-1 without him on 25 September in their opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
According to Winwin, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is pursuing an amicable solution to the dispute. The first step would require Ait-Nouri to apologise to the technical staff and Algeria’s supporters.
That move is thought to be progressing. Ait-Nouri is reportedly prepared to apologise as the FAF attempts to resolve the disagreement and restore a calm working environment around the national team. The coaching staff are also said to be willing to accept an apology from the defender.
The second condition is more difficult and is not entirely within the player’s control: Ait-Nouri must regain regular playing time and continuity with Manchester City.
Since Enzo Maresca took charge at the end of June, Ait-Nouri has been used sparingly. The 105 minutes he has played this season have come across two appearances, including one start.
The 24-year-old, who was born in Montreuil, has yet to feature in the English league. He was also left out of Manchester City’s squad for Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat by Liverpool in the sixth round of fixtures.
With Hemdani expected to announce his next Algeria squad for November soon, time is running out for Ait-Nouri to change his situation. His lack of competitive involvement at club level has left his prospects of an immediate international recall in serious doubt.
Algeria are due to play Togo twice in November in the third and fourth rounds of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. The first match is scheduled for 14 November in Tizi-Ouzou, with the return fixture taking place in Lome on 17 November.
The FAF’s efforts to settle the dispute could therefore prove decisive, but an apology alone may not be enough. Ait-Nouri will also need to establish himself more consistently at Manchester City before he can realistically hope to return to the Algeria squad.
