Isaak Toure ends 895-day wait for FC Lorient starting place

Isaak Toure returned to the FC Lorient starting XI after more than two years out of the team, helping the club secure a 1-0 victory over Paris FC on Saturday evening.

The 23-year-old defender played 87 minutes in his first start for Lorient since 28 April 2024. His comeback follows a prolonged period disrupted by injuries and difficulties away from football.

Toure had to rebuild his match fitness with the reserve side before earning another opportunity from the coaching staff. His return against Paris FC provided an emotional evening for the defender, who is now hoping to move beyond a difficult chapter in his career.

The 2.06m centre-back spoke to Ouest-France about the long wait and the challenges he had faced before returning to the first team.

Toure also addressed the disappointment surrounding his time at Lorient. He joined from Olympique de Marseille in 2023 in a transfer reported to be worth about 8 million euros, a fee that brought significant expectations.

Aware that he had not met those expectations, the defender offered his apologies to the club and its supporters. His latest appearance gave him the chance to begin rebuilding that relationship after a difficult spell in Brittany.

Toure has not hidden the problems he has experienced in recent months, including issues away from the pitch. Having regained a place in the starting line-up, he now has the opportunity to establish himself again as part of the Lorient defence.

He is under contract with Lorient until 2028 and is currently valued at 1.2 million euros by Transfermarkt. His performance against Paris FC could represent a turning point, although he will need to maintain that level in upcoming matches.

Lorient’s next fixture will come against Monaco in the seventh round of the French championship.
