Manuel Neuer admits ‘stupid and naive’ mistake in Bayern Munich draw

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer accepted full responsibility after his side were held to a 2-2 draw by Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

Neuer’s error led directly to Augsburg scoring the fastest goal in Bundesliga history, with Robin Fellhauer finding the net after only eight seconds.

The Augsburg forward pressed the experienced goalkeeper at the start of the match, won possession and finished into an unguarded net.

“I obviously made a stupid and naive mistake,” Neuer told Sky Sport Germany. “I tried to find solutions, but I should have acted differently.”

The 39-year-old added: “Yes, I take full responsibility.”

Fellhauer’s goal surpassed the previous Bundesliga record set by former Hoffenheim player Kevin Volland, who scored against Bayern Munich after nine seconds in 2015.

On both occasions, Neuer was the Bayern goalkeeper who conceded the record-breaking goals.

Bayern recovered from the early setback to score twice, but Augsburg equalised to secure a point in the fifth round of the Bundesliga.

The draw also meant Bayern were unable to take advantage of Borussia Dortmund’s own 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen in the same round.

Bayern are second in the Bundesliga table with 11 points, two behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Augsburg moved to eight points and occupy fifth place.
