Lionel Messi scores twice for Inter Miami after Argentina farewell

Lionel Messi marked his emotional Argentina farewell by scoring twice for Inter Miami in their 4-0 victory over DC United at NIU, with Luis Suarez also finding the net twice.

The result came only four days after Messi’s appearance in Argentina’s farewell match, as Inter Miami continued their MLS campaign during a three-week international break. Suarez settled the contest early by scoring both of his goals in the first half, while Messi added two after the interval.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Messi has now scored 23 goals in the current MLS season, strengthening his position at the top of the league’s scoring standings. However, a post from Major League Soccer on social media referred to Messi having 22 goals as the best total in MLS.

Messi returned to Inter Miami’s starting line-up after Argentina’s farewell ceremony on 6 October in Buenos Aires. He had played in a friendly against Benin that day, scoring once and providing two assists.

The Argentina captain took part in all of Inter Miami’s matches during the international break and travelled home only for the historic fixture on Tuesday. His latest goals mean he has scored in five consecutive matches, counting his goal for Argentina.

He opened his account against DC United shortly after half-time, finishing from inside the penalty area after receiving a decisive pass from Suarez.

Messi completed the scoring in the 60th minute with a solo effort. He dribbled past three defenders, entered the box and struck a powerful angled shot which found the net, prompting a major celebration among the supporters at NIU.

He celebrated with his Inter Miami team-mates, including Suarez, whose first-half double came from two assists by German Berterame.

Messi’s first goal was the latest example of his understanding with Suarez, who played a key role in helping Inter Miami secure a comfortable victory before the Argentine added further gloss to the scoreline.

Inter Miami are second in the Eastern Conference with 49 points. Nashville, who began the round with 60 points, remain top of the standings.
