Barcelona equal best La Liga start as Hansi Flick targets new club record

Barcelona have matched the club’s best start to a La Liga season after beating Getafe 3-0 to make it eight wins from eight matches under Hansi Flick.

The result maintained Barcelona’s perfect record at the top of the Spanish league and saw Flick’s side replicate the opening run achieved by Tata Martino’s team in the 2013-14 season, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Martino’s Barcelona were unable to extend their winning sequence into a ninth match. They were held to a goalless draw by Osasuna, although they remained unbeaten until the 14th round of fixtures.

That run eventually ended with a 1-0 defeat by Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.

Barcelona now have the opportunity to set a new club record for the best start in La Liga next week. However, they face a difficult test against third-placed Real Betis.

Flick’s side will travel to La Cartuja to face Real Betis on Saturday, with victory required to move beyond the record they have matched from the 2013-14 campaign.

Before that fixture, Barcelona must prepare for their next match against Galatasaray. Flick said the team’s immediate focus should remain on that game rather than the possibility of making history.

“The most important thing is to think about the next match, against Galatasaray,” Flick said. “We want to make history, but the most important thing is that the players are fully focused on their work.”
