Jordan Henderson scored twice and set up another goal as Chelsea returned to winning ways with a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge in the sixth round of the Premier League.
Henderson opened the scoring inside the first minute, steering a shot past the Bournemouth goalkeeper after being picked out by Cole Palmer.
Chelsea doubled their advantage in the second minute when Morgan Rogers finished from inside the penalty area following a pass from Henderson. The hosts’ rapid start put them firmly in control before Bournemouth had time to settle.
Joao Pedro added Chelsea’s third shortly after half-time. Pedro Neto produced an individual run before supplying the Brazilian, who struck a powerful finish into the Bournemouth net.
Bournemouth pulled a goal back in the 51st minute through Evanilson, who headed in a cross from Marcus Tavernier.
Chelsea restored their three-goal advantage when Joao Pedro scored his second of the match. He met a cross from Pep Chavarria and sent the ball into the net to make it 4-1.
Henderson completed the scoring in the 70th minute with a direct free-kick that found the back of the Bournemouth goal.
The result moved Chelsea up to fourth in the table on 10 points, while Bournemouth remained 18th with three points.
However, Chelsea’s defence was unable to keep a clean sheet for a 23rd consecutive Premier League match.
Henderson became the second player to score and assist in a Premier League match in less time than he did against Bournemouth only after Emile Heskey for Derby County in April 1998. Heskey achieved the feat within the opening two minutes, while Henderson took two minutes and 29 seconds.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso selected his usual attacking trio of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers for the match.
The victory ended Chelsea’s run without a win after they had stumbled in their previous two Premier League fixtures.
