Joan Laporta backs Lamine Yamal to win Ballon d’Or
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reiterated his support for Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d’Or, insisting the teenage winger deserves the prestigious individual award after another outstanding season.
Laporta believes the 19-year-old has combined exceptional individual performances with important team achievements, strengthening his case for football’s most coveted individual honour.
“It’s only fair that he wins it. He’s had a great season and has won some very important titles, such as La Liga and the World Cup. He deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” Laporta said.
The Barcelona chief also defended Yamal’s outspoken personality, describing him as a sincere and straightforward young player who should be understood in the context of his age.
“That’s how he feels, and I think it’s great that he’s speaking out. He’s a very sincere, very straightforward and very young lad. You always have to bear that in mind. I’d be very happy if he won it,” he added.
Laporta admitted that the outcome remains uncertain, with anticipation building ahead of the ceremony.
“We’ll see how it goes. It’s all shrouded in secrecy. We’re waiting with bated breath.”
The president also praised Yamal’s enthusiasm and his desire to express himself on the pitch, arguing that his talent and achievements have already earned widespread recognition.
Yamal is among the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after helping Barcelona win major honours and continuing to establish himself as one of world football’s brightest young stars.
