Vincent Kompany says Ballon d’Or race is already decided for Harry Kane and Michael Olise
Vincent Kompany says the Ballon d’Or outcome has already been decided, but insists Bayern Munich’s pursuit of team trophies matters more than individual recognition for Harry Kane and Michael Olise.
The Bayern Munich manager was asked about the chances of his two players winning the award at a news conference before Saturday’s Bundesliga match away to Augsburg.
“I think it has already been decided, right?” Kompany said. “So I cannot change anything now, whatever I say.”
He added: “Sorry, but I do not have this Ballon d’Or in my mind every day. Today I am only thinking about Augsburg.”
Kompany said he would be pleased if the award went to a Bayern Munich player, but made clear that collective success remained his main focus.
“I hope a Bayern player wins it,” he said. “But of course, the most important thing for me is that we win trophies with Bayern.
“I know Harry and Michael well, and they think in the same way. That is what sets us apart as a team.”
Kompany was also asked about an expected honour from Markus Soder, the minister-president of Bavaria, recognising his sporting achievements and his stance against racism.
“It is a sporting award. I do not want to receive an award for a speech against racism,” said Kompany. “I do not do it for awards, but because the right thing has to be said at a certain moment. Of course, the award is very nice.”
According to Bild, Kompany will receive the personal award from the Bavarian minister-president at the Bavarian Sports Award 2026 ceremony, which is scheduled to take place after Bayern’s match against Augsburg.
Soder is understood to value particularly Kompany’s clear position against racism and exclusion, the newspaper reported.
The Bayern manager delivered a 12-minute speech at a club news conference in February which attracted worldwide attention. He was responding to racist abuse suffered by Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior during Benfica’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, as well as comments from Jose Mourinho, who was Benfica manager at the time and had placed part of the responsibility on Vinicius.
Kompany’s immediate priority, however, is Bayern’s trip to Augsburg as the club continues to focus on its Bundesliga objectives rather than the individual honours being contested by Kane and Olise.
