Real Madrid ask about Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay as Jose Mourinho link emerges

Real Madrid have checked on Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay amid stalled talks over a new contract with the Italian club.

The Scotland international is reportedly open to a move to Real Madrid if he receives a call from his former manager Jose Mourinho, who handed him his Manchester United first-team debut in 2017 and has continued to refer to him as “my son”.

Italian newspaper Il Mattino reports that negotiations between Napoli and the player’s representatives have made little progress. The continuing disagreement could increase the possibility of McTominay leaving, while several Premier League clubs are also monitoring his situation.

McTominay, 29, is under contract at Napoli until June 2028. However, the reports say extending that agreement is not currently an urgent priority for club president Aurelio De Laurentiis, unlike the player’s representatives, who want his contractual future resolved quickly.

Real Madrid’s interest is understood to have been prompted by McTominay’s performances since he moved to Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 for 30.5m euros.

The midfielder scored 14 goals and provided four assists in 44 appearances last season. His form also earned him the Serie A Player of the Season award for 2024-25.

Mourinho’s relationship with McTominay could be significant if Real Madrid decide to pursue the Scotland midfielder. The Portuguese manager promoted him to the Manchester United first team in 2017 and has maintained a close connection with the player.

Asked whether he would consider joining Real Madrid if Mourinho contacted him, McTominay said: “If that happened, I would think about it.”
